Creatine (methylguanidine-acetic acid) is an ergogenic supplement most used by athletes in recent decades due to its scientific backing with regard to safety and efficacy.
It is produced endogenously in our bodies from the amino acids arginine, glycine and methionine.
The main sources of creatine are to be found in meat or fish, and now in supplements.
Creatine supplementation helps increase our reserves of phosphocreatine, linked to energy production through the ATP production cycles.
The increase in intramuscular creatine concentration is associated with improved sports performance, leading to greater adaptations. However, the compound is currently the subject of a large number of studies and research in various fields such as recovery, injury prevention, thermoregulation, neuroprotection or clinical applications.
Why choose Creatine Monohydrate?
In order to make the right choice of supplement, one of the determining factors should be bioavailability, i.e. the amount of the substance available to perform metabolic activity. According to the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), other forms of creatine, such as creatine citrate, creatine serum, ethyl ester of creatine, buffered forms of creatine or creatine nitrate, have not been able to demonstrate better creatine retention than in the form of creatine monohydrate.
It is also the form with the highest number of studies in terms of efficacy, absorption and capacity to increase performance.
- Creatine improves physical performance in successive sets of short, high intensity exercises. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine.
- The daily consumption of creatine can reinforce the effect of resistance training on muscle strength. The beneficial effect is obtained by taking a daily dose of 3 g of creatine in combination with resistance training, which allows an increased workload over time and which must be performed at least three times a week for several weeks, with an intensity of at least 65-75% of a maximum repetition load.
